I’m very pleased to welcome a writer who is new to me to the blog – please give a warm welcome to Josee Renard, who is celebrating the coming of Spring (aren’t we all?). Hi, Josee!
Spring Fever
I don’t know where you live, but I live on the very wet and chilly west coast of Canada, and we seem to have spent much of the past six months under cloudy skies. And those cloudy skies mean rain. This has cost me:
• The loss of six umbrellas (I don’t know exactly why that’s happened, as I used to be able to use the same umbrella for years)
• Two new pairs of boots (you can never have enough boots in Vancouver) and the repair and/or maintenance of three more
• A new raincoat
• Several scarves
• Three new pairs of gloves (some of my favourite gloves, many of which I’ve had for decades, have begun to fall apart)
And that’s only the physical cost of this winter. I grew up in Vancouver and most years I don’t have any problem living with the winter, in fact, I enjoy it. There are usually a few days when the temperature goes up enough to go out with just a sweater instead a coat, days when you can have your coffee outside on a patio, the grass and the coniferous trees stay green all winter, it doesn’t get really cold except for a few days, and I can walk to work every day. But…
I’ve got spring fever.
It hit me about three weeks ago, in the midst of a truly miserable February. I felt like I was always damp and cold and the sky was unrelentingly dark. But I think it was more than that. I think now that it was because I stopped walking. Oh, I was still walking to work and on errands, but I wasn’t walking on the beach, which for me is the true joy of living in downtown Vancouver.
So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to schedule time to walk the Seawall—even if it’s only a part of it—two or three times a week. Half an hour listening to waves and the seagulls, watching the birds and the water, will get me over my spring fever.
What will get you over your spring fever? Let me know and one of you will win…
